Blog eight: Life in 2040

The year is 2040 and I am a college freshman. I wake up to my hollographic alarm clock that projects the time onto the ceiling of my room and plays my favorite techno tunes. Then my cell phone rings and I open it to see a hollographic screen showing me a list of all the things I was planning to do today, then they screen flashes and changes to a page showing all the current news headlines and realistic television program showing me all the latest fashion trends. The people on my screen are dressed in outfits composed of metalic looking colors, and neon colors. The fabric of the clothing apears to be soft and silk-like . The outfits are ever skimpier then they were in 2010 , and all the outfits for girls seem to resemble a bra and a pair of underwear attatched to each other by stringy tattered fabric. I close my phone and walk downstairs to my living room . The living room walls are covered with mirrors and the ceiling consists of multiple televisions that you watch from flat bed-like couches. I walk outside and get into my hover-craft , I get stuck in air traffic and deside to do things the old fashioned way and use my dads old car. Im driving the only car on the road and still make it to school late. The school is very technologically advanced and every student has a touch screen key board and a hollographic computer monitor at their desks. I sit down in history class and learn about the first black president we had back in 2010 and how bad the economy was during his term as president. I could care less about this information because the economy is fine now . We started using paper coins that were worth as much as dollar bills because they are small, thin, and easier to carry. When going to the cafeteria for lunch , the lunch ladies hand you a metal tray with different sections. Inside the lunch room there are trays surrounding the room and they are filled with tubes. Each tube contains a different food and there are a variety of different tubes. The food inside the tubes is in a paste form similar to toothpaste and it makes eating alot easier. Each tube is filled with the nutrients and vitamins you will need for the day, no matter which meal you choose. When school is over i return to my house and do my homework on a computer similar to the ones at school. Then my family and i grab tubes of food from the kitchen , eat , and then go upstairs to our rooms to go to sleep. My bed has something you pull down over your head, It looks like one of the hair dryers from a 2010 beaty salon. I pull the dome shaped object over my head and It fills with a safe gas that puts me to sleep instantly.

The Internet:A Clear and Present Danger? Question one

I believe that the examples Cleaver lists in the opening of her essay violate our civil liberties. However it would also violate our civil liberties if legislation was passed to make these types of behavior illegal. Although passing legislation to make these acts illegal would make the internet a little bit safer , it would still violate our civil liberties if the government started looking for people who commit these acts. If legislation was passed to make these acts illegal it may cause the police to try and trick people into commiting these acts online so that the police are aware of them commiting these illegal acts. For example when cops pretend to be thirteen year old girls to get sexual predators talking to them until they can get the predator to meet up with them. This is all so they can catch sexual predators and arrest them , but just like the sexual predator the cops are also pretending to be something their not. People should just become a little bit smarter when it comes to the internet. People should not put any information they dont want stolen on the internet and they should not buy anything off of websites they dont trust unless the website has a guarantee that you will recieve your purchase. If you dont want to see pornography dont look it up online and if a software vendor creates software they should be able to restrict people from using it .If your a good parent you should watch the sites your children are going on and block chat rooms so your children don't start talking to pedophiles, and everyone should learn not to talk to strangers. The list is a very effective way of beginning the essay. The list at the beginning of the essay makes people aware of these internet issues before they are explained.

Movie Trailer:Avatar

The movie trailer for Avatar uses visuals to introduce to the viewer a new land and new creatures. There are no words throughout the trailer , but the intensity of the music builds up at the action packed scenes. The trailer uses action and the viewers curiosity to find out about this new land to draw people in to see the movie. The trailer shows alot of the made up technology that is used in the movie to spark the viewers interest. The violence of the war between the soldiers and the creatures shows that there will be alot of action throughout the movie. Showing the girl creature in the trailor , gives the viewer a sense that she may be a possible love interest for the main character. The action and struggles between man and the creatures of a made up land should make anyone want to see this movie.

Movie review:Shutter Island

Shutter Island directed by Martin Scorsese is a psychological horror film. Actor Leonardo DiCaprio plays Teddy Daniels, a United States Marshal who travels to Shutter Island by ferry to investigate the disaperance of a patient from the asylum for the criminally insane. The island itself is creepy and constantly covered with fog. While on the island Teddy starts to have have hallucinations about his wife's death and war images of corpses stacked outside death-camp barracks. Teddy then finds out that his wife's killer could be a prisoner on the island. When the missing patient is found Teddy plans to leave the island but is continuosly held back from leaving by the doctors and the uncontrolable hurricane- like weather. The movie then becomes twisted and complex when Teddy finds out he could be one of the patients at the asylum. Shutter island becomes one of those movies that you continuosly question the information and never figure out the end until minutes after the film has ended. If you like mysteries this is the perfect movie for you because it will keep you guessing until the very end.

"Less Privacy is Good for Us (and You)" Question number two.

Etzioni's article helps readers to see the complexity of privacy issues by pointing out issues we may not have known existed. For example the HIV testing of new born babies. I see how this could be an issue if a mother was to find out she has the HIV virus and passed it on to her child because the mother would be very upset. The mother may feel that her privacy was violated because doctors would automatically know that she is the cause of her childs HIV virus .However without early detection of HIV the new born babies virus will not be treated right away and can lead to the virus getting worse or other health problems. I believe this is, as Etzioni says " the other half of the equation that defines a good society".(pg. 131) We need these concerns for public health and it is a " justifiable diminution of privacy."(pg. 131) The complexity of this privacy issue is that although the HIV testing could be a good thing for society, various civil libertarians and some gay activists oppose the testing because the mother of the new born will find out she is a carrier of HIV and her privacy will be violated. Etzioni tells us about the plan to use driver's licenses to curb illegal immigration. The coalition believes that "this plan pushes us to the brink of tyranny, where citizens will not be allowed to travel, open bank acconts, obtain health care, get a job, or purchase firearms without first presenting the proper government papers."(pg. 132) There can be alot of complexity with this issue. People may begin to feel like they are being tracked by the government and that if they ever get into trouble with the law , the government will already know all about them. With the development of biometrics, people will no longer be able to make new identities for themselves and they will never be able to hide their past. People with minor criminal records will not be able to start over. If biometrics continue to develop , people will feel like they have no privacy and can never hide from the government.

In the video Outposts of Opportunity I learned about what Immokalee used to be like. Immokalee was a swampland inhabited by the Seminole indians and used to be called Gopher Ridge. As more Americans moved to Immokalee they started trading things that they farmed like sugar syrup for things like clothes. Trading was a big factor in helping Immokalee develop into a city. When railroad tracks were built in Immokalee it helped the city to export timber an cattle and ice was shipped to Immokalee from other states. The saw mill and farming brought many new people to Immokalee and Barren Collier made Immokalee Collier county. The South Tamiami trail was created making a route from Tampa to Miami. Also the Texas Fever Tick was killed allowing a bigger cow population. Immokalee became a large farming area. In the video Evolving Opportunities Immokalee's bomber training base from World War II became Immokalee Regional Airport giving the people of Immokalee another option for transportation. Oil was discovered and vegetable farming expanded. Children from Labelle helped pick cucumbers on the farm and then finally farmworkers started moving to Immokalee from different states and even different countries like Mexico. Also the Seminal Indian Gambling Casino was built and more reservations were created.
Immokalee differs from Fort Myers because it is more of a farming town. Immokalee is a representative of the old American dream providing many people with farming jobs. The farming industry will definately drive Immokalee's future because it is the biggest industry in Immokalee. In ten years Immokalee may have the biggest farming industy in Florida. Florida does not get as cold as other states giving Immokalee the advantage because there crops are less likely to freeze during winter. With many crops being exported from Immokalee, the farming community of Immokalee will prosper.

Summary and Analysis of" A Quilt of a Country:Out of Many,One?"

In Anna Quindlen's essay " A Quilt of a Country: Out of Many, One" she wirtes about how a country with so many people of different cultures, ethnicities ,religions, skin colors and sexual preferences can unite as one after a devastating event such as 9/11. The United States of America is a very diverse country with many different ethnicities that don't usually get along. In her essay she gives us examples of how the people of America are united despite there differences by telling us how Arab cab drivers will chauffeur Jewish passengers and yet speak in theory of hatred for one another. Other places in the world like Europe use countries to separate ethnicities, but the United States of America puts all ethnicities into one country to unite as one. She also states how the mexican immigrants of today are no different from the Italian and Irish immigrants from back then.
I believe this is a powerful essay because it shows us that the immigrants who become citizens of the United States have worked hard to be here. Most of them start out in small jobs like Ma and Pa stores. I like how Leonel Castillo points out that the Ma and Pa stores that were once owned by Italian , Jewish and Eastern European immigrants are now owned by the Korean , Vietnamese , Iraqi, Jordanian, and Latin Amercan immigrants of today. This statement shows that the immigrants entering the United States today are not much different from the first immigrants of the United States. The United States is also very excepting of all sexual preferences and homosexuality is becoming nationally excepted.
