Summary and Analysis of" A Quilt of a Country:Out of Many,One?"

In Anna Quindlen's essay " A Quilt of a Country: Out of Many, One" she wirtes about how a country with so many people of different cultures, ethnicities ,religions, skin colors and sexual preferences can unite as one after a devastating event such as 9/11. The United States of America is a very diverse country with many different ethnicities that don't usually get along. In her essay she gives us examples of how the people of America are united despite there differences by telling us how Arab cab drivers will chauffeur Jewish passengers and yet speak in theory of hatred for one another. Other places in the world like Europe use countries to separate ethnicities, but the United States of America puts all ethnicities into one country to unite as one. She also states how the mexican immigrants of today are no different from the Italian and Irish immigrants from back then.
I believe this is a powerful essay because it shows us that the immigrants who become citizens of the United States have worked hard to be here. Most of them start out in small jobs like Ma and Pa stores. I like how Leonel Castillo points out that the Ma and Pa stores that were once owned by Italian , Jewish and Eastern European immigrants are now owned by the Korean , Vietnamese , Iraqi, Jordanian, and Latin Amercan immigrants of today. This statement shows that the immigrants entering the United States today are not much different from the first immigrants of the United States. The United States is also very excepting of all sexual preferences and homosexuality is becoming nationally excepted.

  1. This is true alot of immigrants still get here the same way it was done 100 years ago. Yet the only reason most people are fearful of other races is because we came over here from europe where most people had the same customs. Today most of the new immigrants have customs that are new and strange to us. If we learned to accept people for just who they are we probably would not find them any different from us.

  2. It's true what you said. The immigrants have not changed. The problem though is that these people, immigrate to America to make a better life for themselves, but the grass isn't necessarily always greener on the other side.

  3. I agree that immigrants not only came here the same way our ancestors did, but they also started their lives the same way by opening stores, restaurants, or working in small businesses. Each person who came to America came to have a better life and more opportunities from where they came from. I think it is awful how people in the United States complain about immigrants. They make our country more diverse and we, as Americans, should be more accepting and open to them.

  4. I agree that most American fear change that is why Immigration isn’t welcome now days. Yes there will be new things to come out of the immigrants. If people would learn to accept the fact that other cultures want to live better lives as the American do now everything would be better and American would have time to focus on other more important subjects rather than waste time trying to keep people out of the country and spending lots of money building a fence or anything of that nature.

  5. Just like the story says and some people always see others just by appearance or color based, thinking that they could be bad when they're not, some people don't unite as one and help out our economy in America.

    1. I know 2 wrongs don't make a right, but this kid is doing just that (judging). I am grateful for the freedom of speech but it should be done respectfully and state facts to prove the point. And show some intellect, not ignorance. All I'm trying to saying is we should all think before we speak.
